This term in Blackbird class, we have been focusing on the Topic 'Passport to the World'.
Our first focus text was City Atlas. We used it to begin to learn the key skills of Reading needed in Key Stage 2, such as predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarising. We used our Reading skills to develop our vocabulary and used it in pieces of writing about different cities and countries, such as Rio de Janeiro and Rome. We also wrote adventure stories set in the Rocky Mountains of Canada.
Our second focus text this term has been The Snow Queen. We first wrote poems about the winter to generate ideas and vocabulary, then we used this in our own chapters of the story and to write diary entries to retell events of the story.
In Maths, we have been securing our core number skills and using these to solve a range of tricky problems and challenges. We have also looked at measure, 2D shapes and representing data.
In Science, we have been learning about the different states of matter. We have been investigating and experimenting with solids, liquids and gases and finding out about reversible and irreversible changes. We even took part in a workshop at Magna in Sheffield to find out more!
Our topic has been all about the cities, countries and continents of the world. We have focused on our own country and county and written leaflets about why you should visit Yorkshire. We then focused on the human and physical features of France and Canada to compare to European and North American regions of the world.
We have been learning about the features of Christianity and Islam, including their Holy Book and places of worship.
Our PE this term has been Outdoor Adventurous Activities with Castleford Academy and Dance. We worked as teams in OAA to achieve a goal. We choreographed dances to 'Let It Go' from Frozen in Dance.
In Art, we have focused on Claude Monet. We first used sketching pencils to create light and dark, then we progressed onto using water colours to produce our own version of Waterlillies.
So far, we have been learning how to say our numbers to 20 and days of the week in French. We have also had some conversations with French greetings in pairs.
